Stand Up Paddle – 14′ Race Board Shootout

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012

On Monday the 12th March 2012, RPS The Boardstore in conjunction with SUP VIC, staged a world-first side-by-side test of 14′ current model production stand-up paddleboards available to buyers here in Melbourne. It is important to note that not every 14′ board in the world could be included in this test as we do not have access to all makes and models locally. Furthermore, the conditions decreed that this would be a flat water test and therefore unavoidably favours boards intended for flat water racing. We do not apologise for any of this, however we welcome other groups conducting their own tests in different conditions using other boards as it all adds to the global knowledge base. Anyhow, on with the test…

14 boards, 14 paddlers and a beautiful sunny Autumn day in Melbourne… the scene was set.  Warwick from RPS and PT from Sup Vic had done the lion’s share of organising the event, and as you can imagine, the logistics of gathering as many current model boards as possible, from Starboard, Naish, NSP, Fanatic, Bark, DC, JM, & Sunny King was no mean feat, and much kudos due.

The test run was done at Half Moon Bay, on Port Phillip Bay in Melbourne.  The course was a 150+150m run with a 180 degree turn at one end and a standing start.  Each of the 14 paddlers randomly drew a board out of a hat, (yes, literally) to determine the board selection at the start of each round.  They were timed manually using line of sight to determine the start and end crossing.  Each paddler proceeded to the starting mark and from a stationary start, were counted-down 3-2-1-Go!  The starting procedure and stopwatch were consistent throughout the day, with Stuart Thomas acting as chief timekeeper.

Each round, the times were marked down, all paddlers returned to shore, and drew the next board from a hat.

EVENT – Standup for the Cure

Monday, March 5th, 2012

On May 5, 2012, a unique, first-time event will launch in Newport Beach, California bringing together the worlds of Stand Up Paddle and the fight against breast cancer. Standup for the Cure is the brainchild of Judie Vivian, a breast cancer survivor and advocate for the Orange County Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®. “In 2010, mammography saved my life. I want women locally to have the same access to breast health care that I did. Through fundraising events like Standup for the Cure, we can make that happen for local women. Imagine a fleet of paddlers on standup paddleboards wearing pink in support of breast cancer awareness,” exclaims Judie Vivian.

Standup for the Cure will include: “how-to-clinics” taught by professional and champion paddlers; paddleboard yoga demonstrations; kid’s fun races; team relay races; live music; delicious food; silent auction; and, a special screening of new Gidget movie.

Our sponsors include: Presenting Sponsor, Riviera Paddlesurf; supporting sponsors, Maui Jim; Kona Brewing Company; Ruth’s Chris Steak House; and, Victory KoreDry.

“It’s going to be a celebration of our lifestyle. This is an opportunity for families, friends and survivors to raise money and ultimately save lives by doing something they love. This is a great opportunity to learn how to paddle a Standup Paddleboard and meet the pros that are leading this new revolution,” commented event director Dan Van Dyck, whose mother is a 38-year breast cancer survivor.

Standup for the Cure will take place on May 5, 2012, at the Newport Dunes in Newport Beach, California. The venue is visible from Pacific Coast Highway and the paddling course will wind its way through the scenic harbor. “We chose Newport Dunes as the inaugural site of Standup for the Cure for the visual “pink” impact we can make. Nothing draws your attention like hundreds of paddlers wearing pink,” says, Mike Muir, (insert title) Riviera Paddlesurf, presenting sponsor for the event. Mike inked his sponsorship because of a personal experience with breast cancer.

All are welcome to participate in the day’s events. Organizers have assembled an incredible expo featuring, booths that represent the standup paddle active lifestyle – from board manufacturers, clothiers, standup paddles to healthy nutrition and exercise tips.

Whether you’re a novice or an expert, there will be something for you. From Maui Jim’s we will present Zane Schweitzer who will lead our team of instructors. Riviera Paddlesurf will be joined by the likes of Rogue SUP, Yolo Board and SUP Love who will supply loaner boards and demos for new paddlers. Lunch, which is included with the entry fee, will be provided by Ruth’s Chris Steak House; also included with your entry fee is a custom Pink Permawik Jersey from Victory KoreDry. Happy hour with live music will be presented by Kona Brewing Company to wrap up the day.

You can support our cause by signing up as a team or individual through our Active Giving Portal on the web site.
