Classic Surf – Country Feeling Classic JBay 1984

Wednesday, March 20th, 2013

A Youtube playlist of 3 videos of the Country Feeling Classic JBay 1984. First run as the Beach Hotel Classic in 1981 with sponsorship totaling R850 (now US $130), the inaugural event saw SA and international surfing legend Shaun Tomson beat a field of 27 in flawless 5 foot surf at Supertubes. This became the Lightening Bolt / Country Feeling J-Bay Surf Classic in June 1982 when Cheron stepped in to sponsor the event and Greg Day (Aus) took first place.

The following year saw the amateur division won by Durban’s Marc Wright, with Californian David Barr taking the pro title in what had become the Country Feeling Surf Classic. Upgraded to ASP World Tour status in July 1984, the surfing world suddenly sat up and took notice when Supertubes delivered four solid days of incredible 8 – 10 foot surf, leading ASP General Manager Al Hunt to rate it as one of the best 20 surf contests of all time.

After numerous epic confrontations between the likes of then world champ Tom Carroll, Shaun Tomson and Michael Ho, 18 year-old Mark Occhilupo (Aus) beat Hans Hedeman (Haw) in the final.

Grant Corgan and Dylan Thomas Surfski Molokai 2012.

Sunday, March 17th, 2013

Grant Corgan and Dylan Thomas of Surf Ski Kauai on their Molokai Crossing in 2012.

“A little over a year ago we were given an amazing gift…the gift of getting to celebrate our love.  Jim and Caroline sent us on our honeymoon to the beautiful and magical island of Kauai.  During that time we had extraordinary healing, healing of living in the moment, and seeing the beauty.  One of the magical connections that Jim made was with us and Dylan Thomas of Surf Ski Kauai.   Dylan is a waterman extraordinaire, Surf Ski paddler and an all around phenomenal human being.  Jim had set it up with Dylan to take Grant out paddling in the Surf Ski, knowing the two would hit it off.  The tandem Surf Ski is a 28 foot long / 18 inch wide kayak of sorts, designed for open water/off-shore racing and riding waves”

From Modest Giant  –

PaddleFit is owned by fitness and SUP mad man Brody Welte. Brody has been a friend of ours for years and we have helped him develop his brand (in our previous life as designers) and Chad has been shooting the brand images for PaddleFit for the past 3 years. A big part of Brody’s and PaddleFit’s mission is to provide people with the tools to become healthier and happier through outdoor fitness and SUP (Stand Up Paddling). This piece was shot over a 4 day trip down the PCH starting in Santa Cruz and ending up in San Diego. The goal… to give people a taste of the PaddleFit lifestyle. Enjoy!

COMING SOON – We will be partnering with PaddleFit to film a training program series that will inspire and encourage people to get outdoors and change their body and state of mind.

Molokai 2 Oahu Paddleboard World Championships

Registration for the 17th annual Molokai-2-Oahu Paddleboard World Championships (M2O), presented by Kona Longboard Island Lager, opens Friday March 15th at 12:00 PST. The event, scheduled for July 28th will draw an international field of paddlers and, as in previous years, sell out far in advance of the July 1st registration deadline. Register at

M2O is much more than a championship race. It is a 32-mile journey from Molokai to Oahu across the Ka’iwi Channel – one of the deepest, most treacherous channels in the world. The ever-changing conditions of this channel requires both athletic ability and navigation skills – a true championship test. M2O is the iconic event in the paddling community and has become the milestone for those seeking to define themselves as watermen. Like other iconic endurance events M2O is a deeply personal experience and defines a champion in every sense of the word.

The images and stories from the M2O race fuel the minds of paddlers across the globe driving the passion that propelled paddling as the largest growth segment in action sports today. M2O is infused with the culture of Hawaii and its people and all who attend will feel the enigmatic spirit of Aloha.

[Recap]The Doctor Race 2012 Ocean Paddlers World Series

Wednesday, March 13th, 2013

Fantastic footage and one of the best edits of any paddle race I’ve see. A great retrospective of The Doctor race from 2012. Some great race strategy from Clint Robinson, displays a true passion for the sport of SurfSki paddling – great SUP footage as well..A Must watch IMO.

OceanPaddler World Series & Ocean Sports Media production of the 2012 Doctor Ocean Race. Widely considered as a mini Molokai, the race from Rottnest Island to Sorrento mainland is named after the Fremantle Doctor, a wind the blows most afternoons predominantly S-SW at 20kts plus. This year the world best paddlers are battling for not only a win, but Series Points for the OceanPaddler World Series. Clint Robinson is back for for another crack after dominating in 2009, in his way however is defending champ Tim Jacobs and an ocean of elite paddlers all wanting to pull on the white Doctor gown.
