Whitewater Paddlers Tackle Africa’s Lower Congo River

Thursday, November 28th, 2013

The kayakers battled whitewater at the river’s head for 130 kilometers over five days, taking depth readings of the river bottom all the while. The data was astounding. “We couldn’t believe it,” says Stiassny. “It’s almost like you’re boating over a mountain range. There are huge peaks and enormous troughs. This is the deepest river in the world, there’s no question about it.” In one stretch, the echo sounder registered depths of 220 meters—much deeper than the previous record-holder, the Yangtze River.

The Lower Congo’s extraordinary riverbed topography results its extreme rapids, whirlpools, and underwater waterfalls. Stiassny and Shelly’s data are revealing that these water movements act like brick walls to fish: they separate populations so they can’t breed together.

Deep Water – Australian Series

Saturday, November 23rd, 2013

Stick around and watch all 6 episodes on our playlist!

Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain has partnered with Sydney based marketing specialists Brand Faction, to create an eight part reality TV show that sees six Nutri-Grain Ironman athletes taking on extreme challenges in a bid to win $100,000.

Premiered on Channel Nine on Sunday October 13 at 4:30pm, Deep Water is hosted by Ironman legends Zane Holmes and Wes Berg, an ironman himself and trainer to current world champion surfer Joel Parkinson. Together, Zane and Wes will issue a series of individual and team challenges to Ironman’s biggest names – Shannon Eckstein, Matt Poole, Caine Eckstein, Kendrick Louis, Tanyn Lyndon and Ky Hurst.

Although used to tough physical challenges when in competition, the six will be thrown out of their comfort zone, being asked to adapt and compete in conditions and locations completely alien to them. The challenges include high cliff jumping, rock running, racing over razor sharp reefs, the ‘lung buster’ which comprised of underwater race swimming and gorge running in 50 degree heat.Says Ian Blackhall, marketing manager for Kellogg Australia: “This is new territory for the Nutri-Grain brand but we wanted to create a platform for the Ironman athletes to showcase their capabilities and personalities outside of the Ironman Series. They’re phenomenal athletes but they’re also just a great bunch of guys and role models for teens everywhere. We think this reality series will enable consumers to connect more closely with the Nutri-Grain Ironmen.”Adds Tony Gordon, managing director of Brand Faction: “To truly provoke a connection with the brand’s audience, we needed to place the Nutri-Grain brand ambassadors in an environment that could expose their human frailties. It’s an exciting time to be working on a brand prepared to make brave investments like this.”In 2013, Kellogg’s has restaged the Nutri-Grain brand with new packaging, branding and advertising as well as taking control of the 2014 Nutri-Grain Ironman Series.Deep Water is sponsored by Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain and the Western Australian Government. The series is a prelude to the Nine Network’s exclusive broadcast of the world-renowned Nutri-Grain IronMan and IronWoman Series starting January 19, 2014.

“Aww, I’m competitive. I’m here to be competitive, I’m here to finish, survive and be competitive. Just throw your hat in the ring and see what happens.”

Joel Parkinson wanted to do more than just make up the numbers on the 51km Channel of Bones Hawaiian ocean paddle race in late July … and with a third place team finish with paddling partner Wes Berg, he did much more than just survive.

Spot Check – Thundercloud

Monday, November 18th, 2013

The THUNDERCLOUD crowd funding campaign has been launched ( pozible.com/thundercloud ) as a means of securing the needed funds to finish this independent surf documentary. ( by onepalmMEDIA.com ) Based around one of the most spectacular days in surfing history, June 8th 2012…… When a swell of massive proportions arrived at Cloudbreak, (aka Thundercloud Reef) in Fiji, right in the middle of the ASP World Championship Surfing Tour Event.

For any enquiries, please contact : Talon@onepalmMEDIA.com

You may have seen pictures in the magazines about this day, you may have read stories on the internet about it, THUNDERCLOUD is the full story in motion picture….. going deeper than you think!

With interviews and accounts from the world’s best surfers, that challenged themselves in the South Pacific Ocean that day and survived! We are shining a light on the dark history of the area, re-enacting the murder of King Ratu Imanueli, that lead to the island of Tavarua being handed over to the opposing tribe as a peace offering and how that would effect course of surfing history for years to come, as USA investors sought to create an exclusive surf resort in the area.

We hear from Tavarua Island’s Jon Roseman, the Attorney General of Fiji and the man that lobbied the government to change the decree in 2010, Ian Muller, leading to the liberation of the exclusive wave rights in Fiji.

As Thundercloud Reef was open for the world to enjoy, we recount the awesome swells of 2010 & 2011……. And of course, all the drama and action of the WCT event and subsequent free surfing session that re-wrote the rule book and set the bar for paddle surfing into the future.

All this and more in a 60+ minute documentary called THUNDERCLOUD.

We need your help to make this ground breaking story grace the big screen the world over.

Go to : pozible.com/thundercloud

Pledge your donations there for rewards and support an independently produced documentary about one of the most prestigious waves in the world and all the history associated with it.

Thank you for reading this and your time you spent watching the clip. I truly appreciate it. For more details and updates about THUNDERCLOUD go to : facebook.com/onepalmMEDIA
