Ian Cosenza Indonesia 2015

Monday, November 30th, 2015

The Beaten Track

Sunday, November 29th, 2015

Maz Quinn knows a thing or two about finding surf. Often clocking up hundreds of miles along vast stretches of the New Zealand coastline, Maz has made it his profession to put himself where the waves are best. On any given week within a 500 km radius, chances are he’ll find something well worth a paddle. ‘The Beaten Track’ is a trek through the NZ countryside, often to familiar places that at times show glimpses of their true potential.

During the biggest swell of this winter The Billabong Adventure crew , Sancho, Jerome Sayhoun and Adrien Valero, opted to visit Morocco in the hope of finding cleaner conditions than the stormy weather and winds that accompanied this swell in Northern Europe. They found perfect waves on a slabby left somewhere North of Agadir and then went to the legenday rightander of Safi.

POV Shorts II: Derek Hynd, Part Two

Sunday, November 29th, 2015

Derek Hynd and Andrew Kidman seem to have an understanding. Exemplified in this Surfer’s Journal original, Bottling the Moment, which Kidman penned, the pair of minds track parallel.

Here, in this second of a two-part Andrew Kidman directed short, Derek displays his deconstructed finless surfboard in action in some darn fine beachbreak. We’re still not quite sure how he manages rail gouging redirects without the aid of the blade.

As Kidman noted in an email correspondence that Hynd is completely committed to finless surfing. Hasn’t ridden a board with a fin in years. It’s an experience which has led Derek to wonder, in a Morey-esque mind expanding inquiry, “where would surfing have gone without the linearity of the fin?”

POV Shorts II is a 10-part video series, from surf filmmakers Chris Malloy, Tyler Manson, Joe G, Andrew Kidman and Cyrus Sutton. Each filmmaker has taken on one subject within a general framework, but subject to their interpretation. The shorts will be released over the course of the summer, 2011. Have a look around our video channel for the others, or check back soon as more are released.

Another Day in the Life of Wayne Lynch

Sunday, November 29th, 2015

Wayne Lynch is a surfing legend, blazing individualistic pathways in both the performance and the lifestyle. Ascending during a time of great change and experimentation, Wayne took up the mantle personally, redefining what a surfboard should look like and how it should be ridden. Much of this innovation done outside of surfing’s athletic or institutional complexes.

Today, Wayne’s life is almost as it was 40 years ago. He still shapes surfboards, still lives simply by the sea. Were it not for his recent heart attack, both the observer and Wayne himself, could be forgiven for thinking things had stayed the same, despite how they change. But serious jeopardy to anyone’s health, our surfing heroes included, can have a way of radically altering everything underneath the surface, appearances be damned. A rebirth into the same skin.

Filmmaker Cyrus Sutton provides a window into Lynch’s new life. With a nod to Jack McCoy’s Tubular Swells, Another Day in the Life, is crafted with ultra-fine cinematography and a spare and modernist feel. The viewer is transported back to the Wayne Lynch they grew up idolizing, while making current those admirations and anchoring them in the reality of human mortality.

Derek Hynd, Part One

Sunday, November 29th, 2015

Derek Hynd and Andrew Kidman seem to have an understanding — the pair of minds track parallel.

Here, in this first of a two-part Andrew Kidman directed short, Derek walks Kidman/us through the deconstruction and rebirth of a finless surfboard, while Andrew’s youngsters augment the experience with emotive notes on an electric organ.

As the organ preaches to the beast and foul in the bush beyond the house, Hynd rips apart a perfectly good Lis-ish fish, and rebuilds it for finless sliding. Channeling his oldest friend, Dale Egan, one of Derek’s inspirations for leaving the keels on the beach, Hynd creates something very new out of something old.
