Volcom Fiji Pro Day 3 – The Big Day

Saturday, January 30th, 2016

CLOUDBREAK, Tavarua/Fiji (Friday, June 8, 2012) — The highly-anticipated monster swell hit Fiji this morning, producing massive waves at the world famous Cloudbreak.

Competition was called on for the last two heats of Round 2, with Bede Durbidge defeating fellow Australian Adam Melling in a close battle. In the next heat Brazilian competitor Raoni Monterio was forced to come in early when he seriously injured his knee after suffering a heavy wipeout. That left Australian Kai Otton in the water alone to catch some waves and win the heat.

After the injury contest officials called off competition due to dangerous conditions and unfavourable winds. With the competition off it opened up the line-up to the big-wave specialists and the ASP World Championship Tour competitors brave enough to take on the testing conditions. The standout surfers included Ramon Navarro, Greg Long, Reef McIntosh, Jensen Hassett, Ian Walsh and many more.

Not to be outdone a number of ASP Top 34 surfers mixed it up in the maxing conditions this afternoon, including John John Florence, Patrick Gudauskas, Damien Hobgood, Josh Kerr, Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson.

10-15+ ft XL Blacks Surf | San Diego El Nino 2016

Wednesday, January 27th, 2016

While most surf forecasts showed ‘poor and stormy’ for almost everywhere in San Diego this morning, Blacks started firing for a short 3 hours with almost no one out. At around 9am, the winds shifted to offshore and the prior washing machine glassed out and slowly a few local chargers with their trusty guns started to show up. There was only about 10 guys out, and then the low tide started to drain everything, and like that the 10ft+ ft waves started to turn off. Checking other spots earlier, you would not have thought today would have been a good surfing day. But for the few out, some bombs were ridden. No special turns or barrels, just some heavy rides. Thank you El Nino.

This Is Ozzie Wright

Monday, January 25th, 2016

Desillusion magazine, supported by Volcom and Electric visual are proud to present their latest video “This is Ozzie”, a video portrait that pays tribute to the Australian surfer Ozzie Wright.

Born and raised in a family that he himself calls “a bunch of hippies” , Ozzie grew up on the beaches of northern Sydney, known today to be amongst the most competitive in the world – beaches that gave birth to world champions such as Tom Caroll and Nat Young. But Ozzie quickly decided to choose a different path than the one that led to competitions. Inspired by the skate and punk scene, he was the first person to bring humor and DIY philosophy to the surf scene. From the paintings on his boards, the shape, his special way of surfing ( a melange of strength and airs, normally done in skateboarding) , to the creation of his punk rock band Goon of Doom, Ozzie’s the man who gave new insight to surfing, a fresh perspective that inspired a whole generation of surfers. ( Dane Reynolds, Alex Knost, Dion Agius, etc)

“This is Ozzie” is a portrait of one of the most intriguing personalities that surfing has ever seen. With interview footage that’s never been seen before , Wright shares his fear, his love and his original lifestyle, an pure ode to the core of surf spirit.

The Now: Bryce Young

Monday, January 25th, 2016

Just down the road from a righthand point in the tiny fishing village of Angourie, Australia, Bryce Young had everything he needed to become a great surfer—not the least of which was one of the greatest surfers of all time living under the same roof. “I just call him Dad,” says Young of his father, Australian surf legend Nat Young. “He put me on the front of his board when I was about 4 years old and then handed me my own when I was about 5—a sick ’80s thruster that was fluorescent orange, green, and yellow.” Since then, Young has spent his life riding surfboards both modern and anachronistic, fine-tuning a style to suit them all.
