Tuesday, July 19th, 2016

Starting from a standing position with the power of a paddle makes catching waves easier on a SUP board than traditional surfing…But, surfing an SUP has its own unique challenges and skills to develop in order to become proficient.

3 days cruising around Maui

Monday, July 18th, 2016

Had a blast circling Maui for my friends Amy and Amps birthdays in February. We hiked, we camped, saw wildfires, fed horses(3:55), and laughed the entire time… its 11minutes long, the first half is all go pro clips and the last half are all the good shots from my boy Nick Taylor.

Radical Times in South Africa

Saturday, July 16th, 2016

A land of diversity. Mountainous coastlines vs drought-ridden desert.

The lavishly rich vs the street begging poor. The wildlife of the savannah vs the wildlife of the city. No other country in the world boasts such dramatic contrast. We piled in the rental vans and road tripped from the bottom to the top. Surfing perfect point breaks, bombing hills, eating biltong and living in the “now now”

The Sniper SA Tand Invitational 2016 Highlight Clip

Specker Wins Sniper SA Tand Invitational 2016

Sacha Specker was on fire from the starting buzzer at the Sniper SA Tand Invitational 2016, boosting big back flips and showing true control in the bigger barrels available. Spex was awarded an impressive total of 19.83 points out of a possible 20, riding every wave in the final like the Champion he has proven himself to be.

The Sniper SA Tand Invitational 2016 ran to completion on Sunday the 10th of July 2016, in 4-6 feet waves. Competitors, and the 300 spectators alike, were greeted with warm weather, clean offshore winds, and groomed swell unloading off the Tand reef. The first two heats of the day were slow due to the higher tide, causing the first upset of the day, with 2015 Tand Champ, Michael Ostler, bowing out early and ending the tradition of back-to-back wins set by past Tand champs Jared Houston and Tristan Roberts.

The final was an incredible showdown with the draining tide playing its part. Hot on Specker’s heels was 2 times World Champion, Andre Botha, as well as Cape Town charger, Charles Pass. Botha and Pass both scored in the excellent range with big maneuvers and deep barrels, earning Pass a second place with 17.5 points, and Botha a third place with 16.5 points out of a possible 20. The youngest participant of the final, Wilder Schultz, performed extremely well throughout the event, but just could not get the waves he needed, which resulted in his 4th place finish.

This year’s Shaggy Choice Award was a tough call between Aden Kleve’s big closeout barrel, and Andre Botha’s madman commitment. In the end though, the Shaggy’s Choice Award for 2016 went to Andre Botha, for going over with the falling lip on one of the crazier waves of the day.

The Sniper SA Tand Invitational was proudly presented by Zion Wetsuits SA, in association with Digicape, Pick n Pay, Flatmountain Roasters, Kingdom Longboards, and Surf Ears ZA. With a massive thanks to Red Bull South Africa, for their continued support and commitment.

Gymnastics on a Paddle Board | Whitney Bjerken

Monday, July 11th, 2016

Whitney tries something new…Gymnastics on a paddle board. If it sounds difficult, that’s because it is! Whitney starts out slow, but as she begins to get her sea legs, she gets more and more ambitious. Handstands, headstands, press handstands, cartwheels, back bend kick overs, split leap, etc. Then Whitney performs a beam routine, a vault, and a floor routine. She didn’t do too bad, although it’s clear to see that performing skills on a paddle board does make everything a bit more challenging.

From Wikipedia:
Paddleboarding participants are propelled by a swimming motion using their arms while lying, kneeling, or standing on a paddleboard or surfboard in the ocean. A derivative of paddleboarding is stand up paddle surfing and stand up paddleboarding. Paddleboarding is usually performed in the open ocean, with the participant paddling and surfing unbroken swells to cross between islands or journey from one coastal area to another. Champion paddlers can stroke for hours and a 20-mile (32 km) race is only a warm-up for a well-trained watermen.

Real Axe : Europe

Saturday, July 2nd, 2016

Welcome back to Real Axe! It’s been too long, and the return is pure flavour. RA Europe sees a more diverse dynamic than previous eps: Creed McTaggart, filmmaker Toby Cregan and photographer Dunc Macfarlane roll through France and Portugal with Noa Deane, Dion Agius, Shaun Manners, and Dave Rastovich. And it’s Rasta who “we were all most tripping on,” says Tobes. I could talk about Rasta all day. He’s the sickest. He’s just got all these little insights into surfing. He cares so much about surfing, as much as he cares about environmental things. There’s one bit in the clip where Rasta’s talking, it’s just drunk-guy-rambling, talking about how cool surfing could be if everyone got along, but I wanted to show that Rasta’s just a normal guy. I didn’t want to have him riding dolphins and stuff. That’s why I put him in the trailer eating a packet of crisps. He’s a human dude that swears and is just normal. But he’s really cool.”

Board Tales, Episode 1 – Rasta in Byron

Saturday, July 2nd, 2016

Episode 1 of Board Tales takes place in Byron Bay at the residence of Dave Rastovich. Dave candidly describes stories of pivotal boards in his life found through travel, friendship and the common bond of wave riding. Dave describes each board along with the approach, feel and mindset behind them. In the end, we learn that Dave has chosen to give away most of these boards so that others can experience the same happiness through these crafts that he has – a truly selfless act.

Jamie Powell at Desert Point, June 28th, 2016

Friday, July 1st, 2016

Jamie Powell Wave of the Winter Entry 007 from Desert Point, shot by Bruno Zanin on June 28th, 2016. Entry WOTW-007.… for more entries.

About the Event:
The O’Neill Wave of the Winter competition encapsulates the best rides captured south of the equator.

Same format and packaging. Same rules and regulations. Same props and prize money for both surfers and filmers. Only this time, we’re accepting rides logged anywhere in the Southern Hemisphere between now and September. So Pipeline’s out. Jaws is out. Off-the-Wall’s out. But Kandui, Cloudbreak, Skeleton Bay – anywhere south of zero degrees latitude, really – is fair game.

Grand Prize: $25,000
Filmer Prize: $5,000
