Southern Shuffle

Saturday, September 30th, 2017

Time has clicked to a slow roll on the Southern California coastline after a lamentably flat summer. Rarely is the song of Central Baja so enticing — the call for empty pointbreaks, a schedule as wide-open as the dirt roads cooked dry by the sun. Earlier in the season, Alex Knost called SURFER Photo Editor Grant Ellis and proposed a surf trip through Baja with Australian Jack Lynch and Costa Mesa artist Alrik Yuill. What started as a three-day journey stretched into a week, as the crew left the asphalt asphyxiation of Orange County for marathon sessions on alternative craft. And it wasn’t just sleepy groveling, either.

“We got decently rippable surf because of the swell we were chasing,” says Ellis. “There were some sessions where we got good turns in, and it was uncrowded. You’re looking at Lowers-type sets with no one out. That’s the beauty of Baja: being able to tap into that solo experience. Three-hour surfs with absolutely no one in the water. It doesn’t get any better than that.”

Jonathan Gubbins Ruling Desert Point

Saturday, September 30th, 2017

Lombok and Jonathan Gubbins are a perfect pairing. After some of the best waves in years blitzed Desert Point last month, and it still somehow remained the least crowded it’s been in 20 years. Jonathan was there to greet the swell with open arms, and we’re pretty sure we can’t recall an edit where someone has gotten more barreled in three minutes.

On Location: Desert Point / Scar Reef August 2017

Saturday, September 30th, 2017

Staff photographer Ryan “Chachi” Craig and an international group of rippers took the hard road to score beautiful Desert Point and Scar Reef, one that was pock-marked with car malfunctions and ferry rides packed from bow to stern. But when that lefthand cannon over dry reef is doing its thing, what’s a little extra delay? You’ve seen the photos from the water. Now take a drone’s view, where you can eye Mauro Diaz, Rolando Montes, and more as they thread shallow, square end sections.

Surf Better – Best Hip Stretches for Surfers

Wednesday, September 27th, 2017

Surf Better – make sure your hips can move. Here are the 3 best hip stretches for surfing athletes. This joint complex needs to stay mobile and strong to provide an athletic base for the movements in surfing. Crouch positions, pop ups, full rail turns, the hips need to move well, and stay strong.
The hip joint is a key area for mobility. Here’s 3 key hip stretches for surfers addressing specific muscles or muscle groups around the hip joint. Make sure you can move properly through the hip joint, and regain or restore lost movement. Sedentary postures and lack of movement can limit motion, which can then aggravate other joints from increased torque and force dissipation. If you want to keep surfing pain free, moving well, and staying athletically active, make sure your hips move freely.
