Chasing Big Wave BOMBS at Mullaghmore

Thursday, November 30th, 2017

Mullaghmore has quickly become Ireland’s most famous big wave spot. It’s cold as you can believe (snow-capped mountains are visible), it needs big storm swells to break so it’s always dark and gloomy, and the overall vibe of the place couldn’t be more intimidating.

As multiple storms ran headfirst into the Irish Coast, Andrew Cotton and Hugo Vau scored some big wave bombs at Mullaghmore during the rare swell period…and we mean BIG.

Wednesday, November 29th, 2017

This 4.3mile (7km) Hudson Rover run works in a NW wind and starts at the end of Mine Dock Road in Fort Montgomery and ends at the Peekskill Municipal Launch Ramp in Riverfront Green Park. The route goes under the Bear Mountain Bridge built in 1924 which at the time was the longest suspension bridge in the world for19 months before it was surpassed by the Ben Franklin Bridge in Philadelphia.

The air temp was 0 deg C, 32 Deg F, and with wind chill it felt a lot colder. Boards are Blue Planet Bump Rider 14 x 27, SIC Bullet 14v1 TWC and NSP Race 14 x 30.

“CHIMNEYS” Inside Downwind Run – Long Island, USA – Nov 2017

Tuesday, November 28th, 2017

This “Inside” downwind run starts at Nothport Fishing and Boat Ramp opposite the Northport Power Station, Long Island, NY, USA and ends at the mouth of the Nissequogue River near Kings Park Bluff and the Old Dock Inn. It works in a NWW wind and is 6.5miles / 10.5kms long.

On this day we ere planning on ending at West Meadows Beach heading towards the chimneys on the other side of Smithtown Bay of the Port Jefferson Power Station which is due east of the Northport Power station, but the wind was not in the right direction. Had we done this it, we would have completed the “Chimneys Outer Downwind Run”.

Conditions were pretty radical with winds gusting 30 knots. Boards were SICMaui F16v3, SIC Bullet 14v1 TWC and Blue Planet Bump Rider 14 x 27″

All riders wore leashes, full PFDs, and carried VHF radios. In addition 2 riders carried PLBs

Chasing the Swell

Saturday, November 25th, 2017

This is a three part video and multimedia story that I made for the Los Angeles Times about big wave surfing during the historic El Niño big wave season of 2010-11. The story follows a handful of the best big wave surfers in the world as they chase a swell along the Pacific Ocean from Waimea Bay in Oahu, Hawaii, to “Mavericks” in Half Moon Bay, California to “Killers” in Todos Santos, Mexico. The original multimedia story can be seen here:

Directed, shot and edited by Sachi Cunningham

Winner: New York Surf Film Festival, Associated Press Sports Editors Multimedia Award, Finalist, Webby Awards and Online News Association Awards

With gratitude to all of the big wave surfers in the film and beyond and in loving memory of Noel Cameron Robinson and Sean Collins.

The US National Spearfishing Team lead a trip to Cortes Bank to raise money for World Spearfishing Championships in Peru. The trip was led by Alex Reynaud, Dan Silveria, and Greg Font who are the 3 members of the team. We had a very successful trip with 40+ yellowtail, a lot of bonita, and a blue fin tuna taken. Sharks made an appearance as well, with 4 mako sightings and a hammerhead that got some free meals!

Black Naza

Tuesday, November 21st, 2017

Nazaré is the world’s stage for the biggest waves ever ridden, most of the memorable rides so far were all during big days with favourable or at least sufficient conditions for surfers and safety teams to ride and operate… when conditions go beyond that point, we call it Black Naza.

During the session of February 9th, 2016, things were far from ideal in Praia do Norte, big storm, the swell was big with high period, but the wind was too strong and onshore, most of the waves were too bumpy, the big ones were closing out, the inside looked like nothing less than a war zone. Despite those conditions, Australian hardcore surfers Mick Corbett and Jarryd Foster decided to have a go anyway and test the waters, this guys have made a name charging “The Right” in Western Australia, one of the most dangerous slabs on the Planet, and it’s such a thrill to watch them here testing the limits even in days like this, literally on an unridable naza.

Haydenshapes “Holy Grail” Surfboard Review by Noel Salas EP.41

Monday, November 20th, 2017

The Holy Grail is a great daily driver for waves that range in the 1-6’ surf. The overall outline of this board is unlike anything I have seen or ridden in my 34 years of surfing.
The tail is unique in many ways and the combination of rocker, and bottom contours make this board user friendly and silky smooth from rail to rail with speed.

The Holy Grail in 1-3 surf is very fast down the line because of its low – medium entry rocker and straight or staged rocker running through the center of the board. It also has the wide point a little front from center for additional foam under the chest which makes it a great paddler.

In the 3-6’ surf I felt confident off the bottom and in the pocket due to its medium to aggressive tail rocker, and pulled in tail design. This board combined with the Future Flex construction makes this board very versatile and fun to ride in variety of wave sizes and conditions.

This is a favorite of mine for 2017 for sure and I believe everyone should have one in their quiver!!!

Live Passionately // The Story of Monsta Surf

Monday, November 20th, 2017

We ship worldwide from

The Live Passionately film documents the journey of Monsta Surf’s ‘Live Passionately’ movement. The film follows the tribe as they are taken on the adventure of a lifetime to the Philippines.

In this 50 minute film, the team head to the Philippines in order to find paradise and search for perfect surf… but what unfolded was not what anyone expected at all.

We also want to build awareness and raise funds for more water filtration and re-development projects for the locals affected by Typhoon Yolanda, who are featured in this film.

We’ve put our absolute everything into creating this film with the hope of inspiring millions of people to ‘live passionately’ and consider their impact in their own lives.

Will it work?

I tried the Wim Hof Breathing & Cold Therapy Method for 7 Days | Sorelle Amore

Thursday, November 16th, 2017

I tried the Wim Hof Breathing & Cold Therapy Method for 7 Days. The results are pretty profound, but not in the way I expected it. The method is pretty intense and extreme. Will I continue doing this? Is it safe? Is this just a fad or is this a proven method?

The Wim Hof Method includes breathing exercises, cold therapy, some strength building exercises (push ups) and a special stretching technique. It’s a widely followed technique and the popularity is growing.

My interest in this technique started when I was fed up with winter and wanted to see what my body was capable of. I’m an Australian living in Iceland and I don’t want to be afraid of the cold. And so my journey of discovery has begun.

Warning: This is a VERY dangerous technique if not followed properly. Never do the breathing exercises whilst standing up, driving or underwater. It can result in you passing out and there have been deaths linked to people incorrectly trying this method.

Follow me on my social channels to see the progress:

Today’s video is the beginning of a new ‘Sorelle Tries’ series. What other things should I try? Let me know!

Lots of love to you always.

What Youth: Off Beat – Craig Anderson

Thursday, November 16th, 2017

We’re getting right up and cuddly with the release date of Craig’s new film Slow Dance, which premiere’s later this month, meaning it won’t be long until you’re all hitting play and watching Craig knife under and into Tahitian pits, style through the longest left on earth (that we know of at least) and travel all over the globe with his heroes in tow, all cut together by Dane Reynolds and Dustin Miller.

We spent the other day hanging out with Craig hunting for rocky waves in California and we decided it was the perfect opportunity to spring some Off Beat questions on him. He answered them just as we’d expect: awkwardly perfect.
