Kalani Robb Discusses Rell Sunn’s Legacy Both in and out of the Water | SURFER: Island Pride

Tuesday, September 11th, 2018

When trying to trace the lineage of Kalani Robb’s fast surfing, most people would draw a line to tough, heavy-footed Hawaiian surfers like Sunny Garcia. But while Garcia and his ilk may be influences of Robb’s, the truth is that Robb actually found his greatest inspiration in the grace and fluidity of Makaha’s own Rell Sunn. In this episode of “Island Pride,” Robb discusses why Sunn is seen as the patron saint of surf style in Hawaii, the effect that she had on his surfing and how she didn’t just inspire people with her surfing, but with the way that she lived her life on land with poise and grace even in the most dire of circumstances.

Balangan Throwing Some Shade – 8 September 2018

Sunday, September 9th, 2018

I wouldn’t put the sun screen away, but the old girl was throwing up a head-dip here and there. A super low tide and medium sized swell meant a more than usual number of waves were linking up down the reef at Balangan.

West Oz’s Infamous Slab “The Right” Rages Again. | Sessions

As the Southern Ocean’s 2018 winter wave season goes full tilt, big wave rider Ross Clarke-Jones heads to West Australia’s infamous slab, The Right, for a tow session that won’t soon be forgotten.

From Nazaré to Waimea, Shipstern to The Right, no matter how quick in succession the swells may be, there’s a chance you’ll see Clarke-Jones out there, getting crazier waves than almost anybody else.
But let’s not forget the locals, who always lead the charge when The Right comes alive and rages. Guys like Jake Osman, Brad Norris and Zac Haynes have logged some of the craziest barrels we’ve ever seen, and their performances in the edit above is no exception by a long shot.
