Dusty Payne Rescue at Pipeline

Monday, January 8th, 2018

Just before 10am local time this morning, Maui’s Dusty Payne suffered a serious wipeout after hitting the reef at Backdoor. Payne was underwater for five waves — approximately a minute and 20 seconds.

“I was paddling back out to Pipe and I saw Dusty going for the wave,” said Big Island charger Jimmy “Ulu Boi” Napeahi. “It was a super steep drop, right where you don’t want to fall. So when he fell, I knew it was a nuts wipeout and started paying attention. Pretty soon, Keoki [Saguibo, longtime North Shore photog] yelled — I caught a little wave and beelined to Dusty and tugged on his leash to see if he was there….”

Live Passionately // The Story of Monsta Surf

Monday, November 20th, 2017

We ship worldwide from

The Live Passionately film documents the journey of Monsta Surf’s ‘Live Passionately’ movement. The film follows the tribe as they are taken on the adventure of a lifetime to the Philippines.

In this 50 minute film, the team head to the Philippines in order to find paradise and search for perfect surf… but what unfolded was not what anyone expected at all.

We also want to build awareness and raise funds for more water filtration and re-development projects for the locals affected by Typhoon Yolanda, who are featured in this film.

We’ve put our absolute everything into creating this film with the hope of inspiring millions of people to ‘live passionately’ and consider their impact in their own lives.

Will it work?

Black Rain

Wednesday, November 15th, 2017

Deus Ex Machina is proud to present a short film by Andy Gough – “Black Rain”

The black rain squall rolled overhead. Its downpour came in sideways sheets, turning the clean ocean surface to chatter.
The drops falling heavy pushing deep below the water’s surface, joined by the welcome taste of rainwater. In a matter of minutes the squall had passed and the light offshore returned to groom the empty lineup.
Waves peeling down the rocky coast, leaving nothing but turbulent water, only smoothed in time by the returning black rain.

Steppies sessions from the Gold Coast whihc is famous for its perfect, ruler-edged right pointbreaks. When a giant swell hits, however, things get a little more serious. Below-sea level mutant pits. Sweeping currents. Many surfers resort to skis in conditions like this, and it becomes a step-off bonanza.

Anthony Walsh and Matahi Drollet POV in Tahiti.

Thursday, August 24th, 2017

The footage is nothing new. Anthony Walsh and Matahi Drolliet ooze into flawless crystalline Tahiti over and over again via their Omni warped-to-spherical 360 camera. The kicker here, though, is in the new editing software. GoPro has released a user-friendly program called OverCapture, and the tweaks here are noticeable compared to the edit’s original release.

“OverCapture is more than just the ability to capture content from every angle, it also enhances what you can do with the content after you’ve already captured it. Users have the flexibility in post-production to utilize the entire spherical file to find the perfect shot from which to punch out a full 1080p, traditionally-framed image,”says GoPro. The tweaks are noticeable compared to the original release.

Moving forward, GoPro plans to use their new Fusion spherical single-lens camera to further push the 360 angles. No longer will surfers need multiple GoPro cameras molded together in bulk to perform “mini world” -like visions.

“Fusion is the ultimate capture device for fully immersive virtual reality content, non-VR video, and even photos,” GoPro writes. “It captures stunning 5.2K30 video and breathtaking photos in full spherical—but that’s not all. Imagine never having to worry about framing your subject…ever. Yes, cameras do the heavy lifting already, but it still takes the eye to compose a shot, right? Well, thanks to Fusion, our users will be able to record their moments in all directions and then go back and choose the composition they want. This is referred to as OverCapture or reframing. It’s like having a camera team with you when you shoot capturing your primary and b-roll footage. From there, you have the flexibility in post-production to pick and share all sides of your story in conventional HD.”

April 11, 2017 By SURFER

Seems like the sand is still shifting from last year’s winter. Ask any SoCal surfer who put it all on the line during the ’15-’16 El Niño season, and chances are good their legs are phantom-burning at the thought of chasing waves up and down the coast and following barreling bread crumbs south of the border. Timmy Reyes and Alex Gray enjoyed El Niño to its fullest in their search for XL swell, but they couldn’t resist another trip to Baja last April, along with photographer Russell Holliday and filmmaker Taylor Curran, to pin down more sand-bottomed tubes before the season ended.

“I had a good feeling about this trip,” says Reyes. “We drove there all morning, we got there in the evening, and we essentially walked up to good waves. Around noon the next day, the tide was going lower and the swell was picking up. The first frontlines of the swell looked like a mixture of J-Bay with a super grinding barreling section at the bottom – but Baja style.”

“As the swell progressed on, the sand was moving really fast,” he continues. “We actually started at the top of the point and then followed the sand all the way down throughout the day. It almost didn’t feel real. Each day, there was a new sandbar forming. They were one-of-a-kind sessions.”

An iconic season, a hunch for groomed sands, marathon surfs at first light and then Cervezas at dusk – if there’s one edit today that will leave you dreaming of pointbreak bliss, this is it.
