Sunday, May 4th, 2014

Taylor Robertson walks us through running waterfalls on a stand up paddleboard. This 40+ foot waterfall has never been attempted on a stand up whitewater Board, but has been successfully navigated multiple times in a kayak by both Taylor Robertson and Dan Gavere. Water levels have to be optimal and at high water this same drop can be extremely dangerous.

Nikki Gregg Talks Whitewater

Thursday, January 30th, 2014

This summer, SUP magazine organized a Main Salmon River trip in Idaho with Middle Fork River Expeditions. Some of the sport’s best athletes signed on so we used the expedition as an opportunity to examine the state of whitewater SUP–-from the paddlers to the competition to the cultural blender, as ocean and mountain culture collides on the rio. Check out the feature in the Winter Issue, on newsstands now.

This segment of “The River Life,” features Nikki Gregg, one of the SUP’s most influential female whitewater paddlers, talking rivers and women. Check back next week as we conclude our River Life series with Ken Hoeve.

Look for more river scenes in Brent Deal’s new movie H2Mexico, to be released in April of 2014.

Whitewater Paddlers Tackle Africa’s Lower Congo River

Thursday, November 28th, 2013

The kayakers battled whitewater at the river’s head for 130 kilometers over five days, taking depth readings of the river bottom all the while. The data was astounding. “We couldn’t believe it,” says Stiassny. “It’s almost like you’re boating over a mountain range. There are huge peaks and enormous troughs. This is the deepest river in the world, there’s no question about it.” In one stretch, the echo sounder registered depths of 220 meters—much deeper than the previous record-holder, the Yangtze River.

The Lower Congo’s extraordinary riverbed topography results its extreme rapids, whirlpools, and underwater waterfalls. Stiassny and Shelly’s data are revealing that these water movements act like brick walls to fish: they separate populations so they can’t breed together.

Retro – Early Whitewater SUP Fletcher Burton South Silver

Wednesday, May 29th, 2013

Fletcher Burton stand up paddling (SUP) South Silver Creek in California.

Video of Fletcher Burton’s epic stand up paddling (SUP) descent of South Silver Creek’s 600 foot per mile section. South Silver has always allured whitewater enthusiasts to it’s granite paradise of waterfalls and slides. It was no surprise to us when Fletcher called and wanted to try it’s first SUP descent. The sport of SUP has migrated inland and continues to grow with new vertical descents. Determined to take these “limits” to an entirely whole new level, Fletcher charged it and attempted every drop at least twice (even with a busted leg after Skyscraper). Fletcher has been pushing his the limits of the sport even before it hit mainstream, by standing up on his wave ski. No stranger to the paddling world either, he has many accomplishments including:

– 7x’s US Waveski National Champion
– 2x’s US Surfkayak Champion
– 2nd at Worlds Surfkayak in Brazil
– 2nd at Worlds Waveski in New Zealand
– 3x’s California dungeons and dragons champion (not really, he wrote that in)

Enjoy the film and we think Fletcher said it best,

“Maybe a stand-up paddler will never do what a kayaker does [on steep creeks] but there is a learning curve and gear to be developed to be able to accomplish something like South Silver Creek.” – Fletcher Burton
